We're Hiring: Assistant Operations Manager

About Us: Ground Up PDX is a small-batch nut butter company that employs womxn overcoming adversity to provide them with job skills and training to get back on their feet. We produce peanut-free, honey-sweetened nut butters in flavors such as Cinnamon Snickerdoodle and Coconut Cardamom with chia seeds. Our products are sold in New Seasons, Whole Foods, Fred Meyer, and other PNW retailers, along with significant business through ecommerce.

As our Assistant Operations Manager, you are a leader that creates community and will be responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the Ground Up Production Kitchen and Warehouse. You will pull together all of the pieces of the puzzle, from production planning to warehousing and fulfillment to staff supervision to staff scheduling. You have insight into it all and help to ensure it’s all running smoothly. This is a full-time, hourly role based in Portland, Oregon at our HQ site.

Responsibilities include:

  • LEADERSHIP
    • Support the Operations Manager and Production team to ensure production & quality control goals are met
    • Provide coverage for kitchen crew breaks throughout the day, and fill in gaps where needed
    • Assist in all aspects of the kitchen on production days
    • Act as Manager on Duty on the kitchen floor, and lead production
    • Model efficiency and adherence to health and safety protocol while working in the kitchen
    • Support Freight and Wholesale when needed and provide forklift support
    • Navigate ambiguity while creating and implementing systems and processes
  • TEAM SUPERVISION
    • Play a large role in cultivating positive team culture
    • Utilize leadership skills to create and promote an environment where employees are engaged, empowered, and committed to the success of the company
    • Coach, guide, train and give feedback to training program staff on the floor
  • SQUEEZE PACK PRODUCTION
    • Manage and oversee the implementation of our squeeze pack production
    • Contribute to Squeeze Pack SKU Expansion 
    • Lead production days for squeeze packs (with oversight from the Operations Manager)
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT
    • Assist in other production and warehouse related projects as the need arises
  • KITCHEN SANITATION AND FOOD SAFETY
    • Maintain high standards of quality and kitchen sanitation in line with regulatory agencies
    • Attend trainings on kitchen sanitation and protocol to stay up to date with current requirements and regulations
    • Knows, understands, communicates and facilitates a safe work culture, ensuring compliance with all company safety/environmental and housekeeping policies
    • Ensure sanitation practices and record keeping are maintained to hygenic food safety regulatory expectations
    • Update HACCP plan according to production changes
  • OVERSEE SHIPPING AND ORDER FULFILLMENT
    • Own the shipping process for Ground Up, including all orders that come in through our website and grocery wholesale account orders
    • Execute the fulfillment and shipping to get orders out in a timely manner
    • Printing and packing support as needed
    • Supervise and assist in the creation of tasting flights
  • RECEIVING
    • Receive packages that come into the warehouse while checking invoice against purchase order
    • Freight Incoming / Outgoing 
    • Manage Forklift including weekly maintenance and propane tank refilling
    • Check warehouse calendar daily and update
    • Letting the owner know if a pallet doesn’t arrive or get picked up on set date
    • Receiving signed Bill of Lading + filing it
    • Confirming the correct pallets are going on the right trucks
    • Putting pallets away on shelving by EOD received
    • Greet customers and guests who arrive at the warehouse
  • ADMIN TASKS
    • Supply ordering
    • Accounts Receivable and Payable
    • Distribution chargeback communication
    • Staff Scheduling

Non-Exempt, Hourly Position

  • MON, THU, FRI 830A-430P Wholesale Warehouse
  • TUES/WED Production: 8am-4:30-6 (Varies based on production end time)
