Read on to learn more about Gia's story and her favorite way to enjoy Ground Up!

Looking back on your journey, how would you describe your personal growth over the last year?

I have grown here at Ground Up and had a lot of different job titles since originally graduating the program. I started in the production kitchen, I loved being in there working with the machinery. It was great to cover so much work in one small area and to train and teach others how to work in different areas of the kitchen. I miss the muscles that I developed- I was in great shape!

It's important to me to see different aspects of things, I have learned so much in the different titles and jobs I have gained over time. From kitchen to fulfillment to customer service, I like to try new things and not be locked up in one skill or area.

What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time at Ground Up?

Consistency and showing up; this is the longest I have been at a job or with a whole company. I have learned consistency here, I have learned to be honest with what I need to do. I am able to self-advocate here and feel supported by the team.

Were there any moments or people that had a particularly meaningful impact on your experience?

Coming back to work after some time due to my health, everyone was supportive and checked in to help at and outside of work. There are not a lot of jobs that will adjust for accommodations. Wendy has been integral in keeping me alive and supporting me in and outside of work. Hayley for helping and training me for what I do right now. They made a place for me at ground up to grow into these positions and titles. Advocating for myself was easier to do here because people offered to help.

How has this experience shaped your confidence in stepping into the workforce or pursuing new goals?

I interviewed for the sales internship here and there were a lot of candidates interested. The interview process was surprisingly competitive but what I have gained working here is the confidence to advocate for important needs and not feeling guilty for asking.

What advice would you give to someone just beginning the program?

Stretch! Haha. Take advantage of the resources, the opportunities, and enjoy the environment. It is not common and very special, a company run by women and serves  women, queer and non-binary folks that is so unique from other jobs. I have had only one other job that mirrors Ground up but not an exact one to one. There are many many things and resources to use and enjoy!

Can you share a challenge you overcame during your time here, and what it taught you?

The health recovery process is long, and the grace I was shown in the time I have been here at Ground Up while my healthcare adjusted is worth noting. I was able to show up as myself in those difficult moments. Showing myself some grace over time here and remembering that I can ask for help or not be on top of everything. We are not expected to be able to do everything here.

What’s your favorite Ground Up flavor + your favorite way to enjoy it?

Some of my favorite flavors are salted maple and pistachio baklava. I like to eat it straight from the jar!
