Meet Sam

Meet Sam! We’re so excited to catch up with one of our amazing Training Program graduates, Sam. During her time at Ground Up, Sam was known for her eagerness to dive into any task and the positivity she brought to every corner of the kitchen. Now, we’re reconnecting to hear what life has looked like since graduation, and to reflect on her journey and the impact of her time here at Ground Up HQ.
Can you share a little about what you’re up to now—work, personal life, creative pursuits?
I am a caregiver. I care for elders who need assistance staying in their home. I provide companionship, housekeeping, and love, taking my client out and about to see different places.
How has life changed since graduating from Ground Up?
Ground Up changed my life significantly. Their opportunities taught me how to be a responsible worker. The people showed me community and support. The owners / management showed me patience when I struggled with health / mental health obstacles. Even to this day, they are on my list of resources because once you work there; when you move on, if you need help, they are there.
Are there any lessons or values from your time at Ground Up that you still carry with you today?
Ground Up helped me grow and come into my own confidence. They gave me chances when others wouldn't, and they guided me towards a life I enjoy. They supported me in finding who I am in the work world and pushed me to be my best. Ground Up is doing incredible work for women with obstacles.
What’s something you’re really proud of accomplishing since graduating?
Being back in the work world feels like a miracle. Not just working, but giving back to the older generation. Supporting those who have guided us and loved us. Parents / grandparents who might not have family close by and are in need of a hello and hug. I feel like I've found a career that is meaningful.
How do you prioritize your well-being today? Any tools or practices that help you?
I absolutely love art. Creating. Drawing is my #1 but I am a versatile artist. I'm also volunteering at Arabian Horse Rescue, and that has been a dream come true. Working around horses has been something I've wanted since childhood and never thought would happen. I absolutely love it.
What's your favorite Ground Up flavor + how do you enjoy it?
The Brownie Batter flavor is hands down my favorite. I was so excited when I saw they collaborated with another chef / company and finally made it. Straight from the jar is how I enjoy it. But if i'm feeling extra fun i'll add it to some vanilla ice cream.

What has your experience with Ground Up been like? How has it helped your self-confidence?
Being with Ground Up has shown me that I am capable of finding a workplace I enjoy going to. I find myself overcoming barriers such as anxiety, PTSD and depression when I am working. The environment and people I work with help significantly in making work a healthy place to be.
What does it meant to you to have a job opportunity and be back in the work force?
To me it means providing structure and stability for myself and my two sons. It means feeling accomplished rather than sitting at home with my anxiety. I feel like I am enough when I am here. That what I bring to the workplace is valued.
What is the community at Ground Up like? What does having this community mean to you?
The community here at Ground Up is encouraging, understanding, and supportive. My manager Molly has been amazing hen I talked to her about my recovery schedule outside of work and was willing to work with me around that. The women I work with here are caring. Having an environment such as Ground UP means I can work hard at sobriety and professionalism.
What do you like to do for fun?
I love being outdoors. Swimming is my favorite, as well as camping. My real passion is art. I get lost when I am drawing, painting, or creating and hope to one day see my art in a gallery.
What is your favorite Ground Up nut butter flavor + favorite way to enjoy it?
I love Marzipan with Sprinkles. I typically just eat it out of the jar, however, I really want to get some Krispy Kreme glazed donuts and put it on top. The combination sounds amazing.
What do you hope to do after Ground Up?
I want to thrive. When and if I leave Ground Up, I want to find a workplace that offers a similar environment. This is the first job that has shown concern about my wellbeing, not just how hard I work. I hope there is another workplace out there that cares for its employees as individuals; just as much as Ground Up does.
